John Mellencamp tells Billboard magazine that his music career was just a way for him to put off being a painter. “I started when I was 22. Now I’m 70 and still doing my job. Who would have ever predicted that? I’ve enjoyed an artist’s life. Being as lucky as I’ve been, the music business has given me the opportunity to really paint, which is really what I started out to do but got sidetracked for 45 years with music. So, I’m the luckiest guy of all the guys that started in rock bands.”
ZZ Top star Billy Gibbons recently did an interview for The New York Post when he said Jimi Hendrix taught the band a lot about how to play live. “He absolutely taught us volumes (pun intended) about guitar playing technique, approach and far beyond. Jimi was able to wring sounds out of a guitar that its makers never imagined it was capable of. He was a mentor, a teacher, a friend and an inspiration and remains so to this day.”
Red Hot Chili Peppers star Flea tells NPR.org that he was a shy child until his family moved to Los Angeles. “I was a shy, weird kid who became just wild after we moved from New York to Los Angeles. I was in the street, unwatched, getting into trouble, running around doing dumb things.”
