A new survey asked people WHY their various devices aren’t updated RIGHT NOW, and here are the top responses. (You could give more than one answer. How many of them can YOU relate to?)
1. They forget it’s available . . . 23%
2. They’re happy with the current software and are nervous the new version will be worse . . . 22%
3. The time it takes to install . . . 15%
4. They’re afraid it will reset or change their settings . . . 15%
5. They’re worried the update will add A.I. features they didn’t ask for . . . 15%
6. They don’t have enough storage . . . 13%
7. They’re afraid it will slow down their devices . . . 13%
8. Needing to remember, reset, or re-enter passwords . . . 11%
9. They don’t have the time to wait for updates to install . . . 9%
10. Their device is too old to update . . . 9%
11. They don’t know if it will cost anything to update . . . 6%
12. They don’t remember the password they would need . . . 6%
13. They have “muscle memory” of their devices as they are now . . . 4%.
54% of people do believe tech companies deliberately put out updates that make their devices worse over time . . . pushing them toward premium features or device upgrades.
But messing with the familiar is a big deal. 68% of people say they’d be more likely to install something if it was JUST a security update that didn’t change the design.
