| Sleep Hack Study Time magazine says many sleep experts recommend writing “to-do lists” before bedtime in order to fall asleep faster. Putting essential tasks on paper reportedly allows the brain to relax and set responsibilities aside for the night. Various studies have shown that people fall asleep an average of nine minutes faster when they spend five minutes before bed writing their tasks down. The strategy is known as “cognitive offloading” as it reassures the brain that the things that need to get done won’t be forgotten. It also helps with morning routines so time isn’t wasted on organizing the day. Psychologist Stephanie High says, “You have all these [mental] tabs, you have all these apps open, and there’s always some activity in the background. Even when you’re not actively looking at one, it’s using a little battery and memory. Writing the task down allows you to acknowledge that it requires your attention and then set it aside. “I know that I need to put my attention on this, but I don’t need to do it right this second.”” |
