Former Journey lead singer Steve Perry tells Louder Sound that he never read reviews. “I only read three reviews in my whole life. Then I decided I wasn’t going to read them any more. Every night, we’d get one encore, a second encore. That was my review. I didn’t need to read tomorrow’s paper.”
Lindsey Buckingham tells Louder Sound that staying true to himself is his secret to being a successful musician for several decades. “I think a lot of it is about the choices you make along the way, and somehow not losing your perspective, you know? I’ve seen a lot of people do that. I’ve seen people in Fleetwood Mac do that, allowing themselves to be defined by external forces and expectations rather than their inner beliefs and the soul of where all this stuff should come from. Staying creative takes work and not getting distracted by the task of that, for sure.”
Daryl Hall tells Classic Pop magazine that it was much more challenging to get your music heard back in the 80s than it is now. “It was a rough time back then. There were a lot of gatekeepers, a lot of people who had power over what came into the world. It wasn’t like it is now. We just put something out online and get to people in many different ways. These people were invested in another concept at the time.”
Steven Tyler tells Haute Living that he wasn’t happy with how his record label treated Aerosmith when they first came on the scene. “Imagine that your biggest dream is that you wanted to be signed to a label. It was our only dream. However, our managers lied to us. They had a deal with the label, and we weren’t signed to a label. But that didn’t stop us. Between our management and our money people, we did not get what we deserved. How did I survive in the music business? By being in a band that sat together in New Hampshire, New England in the 1970s that had a dream.”
Madonna tells Interview magazine that the movie about her life hasn’t been made due to lack of budget from the studio. “I was supposed to make a movie about my life. I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting. We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget because I needed—I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget. They couldn’t get their heads around it.”
