Billy Joel tells Far Out Magazine he would never compare his success to the legendary Ray Charles. “As good a pianist or as big a star as I could ever become, I could never be Ray Charles, who is a total natural and one of the greatest singers of all time.”
Huey Lewis tells Louder Sound he was initially very hesitant to write a song for “Back to the Future”. “I was reluctant because I thought it was a kids’ movie. And we were quite popular at the time – we’d had a bunch of hits – so I had no desire to do it. But Zemeckis talked me into it. We agreed I’d do a cameo if I was disguised and uncredited. So they made this part up for me, and we filmed it in a matter of hours at a high-school gym.”
John Oates tells Forbes Magazine that part of his new album ‘Oates’ was inspired by a young soul band from New York. “I was looking for inspiration. And our booking agent is good friends with this great young soul pop band from New York called Lawrence. I started listening to them and the more I listened to them, the more I got inspired. I love the energy. I loved the vibe that they were doing. And I said, ‘Man, I need a song like this on my album’…And then I said I’m gonna try to write a song that sounds like them.”
John Fogerty says meeting his wife Julie may have saved his life. “If I hadn’t met her, I probably would be dead. Simple as that. I didn’t see any way out. I was really abusing myself, alcohol mostly. I really felt bad inside.”
Slash tells Rolling Stone magazine that he actually stole his iconic top hat. “I went into this in store on Melrose Place in Los Angeles and saw a top hat, and was like, ‘Oh that looks cool.’ And we had a show that night. So I was definitely looking for something to wear for the show that evening. So I stole it. I wore it for that show and it just became the hat I felt really cool in.”
